Lighting Glossary
For the normal lighting tasks in the living area you do not need light engineer. The most important lighting and lighting technical terms should be now listed for better understanding here.
Find out more about light
General lighting - even illumination - is the general lighting without the light of various visual tasks . It ensures that the architecture , the objects and people in the room can be seen and allows orientation and communication.
Accent lighting - is the emphasis on individual room areas or objects with light. The accents come into their own when the level of the accent is on the level of general lighting.
Lighting level - describes the average illuminance in the room or at individual locations . About the connection values for low , medium , high or very high level of illumination .
Illuminance - are in lux (lx ) to the luminous flux from a light source on a certain area . It is one lux , when the luminous flux of one lumen one square meter of surface uniformly illuminated .
Glare - can be used directly by the lights go out ( direct glare ), or indirectly by reflection reflections on shiny surfaces ( reflected glare ) . Glare impaired visual acuity and reduces the visual comfort.
Fire safety symbols - provide information on the extent to which the self-heating of a lamp is limited and on which an inflammable substance, it must be mounted.
CE - The CE mark is not a security sign. It is installed by the manufacturer 's own responsibility and is addressed to the authorities responsible for the supervision of certain EU directives. A labeled exclusively with the CE symbol product was therefore tested by any recognized testing agency .
Dimming - With electronic dimmers , the luminous flux of lamps can be almost lossless from light to dark control : dim . Incandescent and halogen lamps operate with conventional dimmers. For low-voltage halogen lamps , there are special dimmer. Fluorescent lamps and 4-pin compact fluorescent lamps can be dimmed with dimmable electronic ballast .
ECG - is the abbreviation for electronic ballast . Due to their efficiency and high visual comfort and ECG dimmable ECGs are increasingly used instead of conventional or low-loss ballasts .
ENEC mark - see VDE mark
Color rendering property - a lamp indicates the color effect , which causes its light on objects . It is assessed with the index Ra. Ra = 100 is the best value. The lower the index, the worse the color rendering properties .
Lamp bases and sockets - LED bulbs and LED bulbs are available in many varieties and with different bases / sockets . The base of the LEDs of course correspond to the sockets that you know of old , commercial Glühleuchtmitteln . Accordingly, there is an LED alternative for incandescent and halogen lamps. Here the common base of the lamps are listed.
- GU10 socket - LED Bulbs for replacement of 230V halogen lamps
- MR16 shape with the GU5 , 3 base and 50 mm in diameter - For the standard version of the 12V halogen spotlights
- The MR11 shape - 35 mm diameter smaller than MR16 , even with the GU5 , 3 fitting . Designed for 12V voltage
- G13 (T8 ) base - is used in the fluorescent tubes . However, the LED tubes contain no toxic gases , consume much less power and do not require starter or ballast
- Even with the known screw sockets ( bayonet socket ) E27 makes the modern development of lighting technology does not stop . For 230V voltage. The E27 is lamps with PAR30 and PAR38 design also used for the LED . This high performance radiators are very bright and also very efficient - for the sake of the environment.
- Also the Light Emitting Diode bulbs are available for the E14 ( 230V ) .
Luminance - is the measure of the brightness perceived by the eye of a luminous surface. The rate of the luminance in candelas per square meter (cd/m2 ) .
Light output - is a measure of the efficiency of a light source. It tells us how many lumens (lm) per watt (W ) produces a lamp . The higher the ratio lumens / watt , the more efficient the light source.
Light color - describes the color appearance of a light source . It is characterized by the color temperature Kelvin (K). ww < 3300 K nw 3300 K - 5000 K tw > 5000 K Luminous intensity is the amount of luminous flux that radiates in a certain direction. The spatial distribution of light intensity characterizes the light output of lamps and reflector lamps. The light intensity is measured in candelas (cd) .
Luminous flux - is the light output of a lamp . It describes the light emitted by the light source in all directions in the visible range , as measured in lumens.
Light distribution - the spatial distribution of light intensity. Shape and symmetry of the light distribution characterize deep and wide - or symmetric and asymmetric luminaires . The light distribution can be read in a light intensity distribution curve ( LDC ) . It occurs when the luminous intensity of a lamp in their different beam directions shown in polar coordinates are connected to form a curve . Reflectance indicates how much of the incident on a surface light flux reflected . White walls have a reflectance of up to 85 percent , a bright wood paneling still reflects up to 35 percent of light.
Circuit symbol - in accordance with DIN 40717 ( see symbols for the lighting plan ) simplify lighting design and facilitate communications between all parties involved.
Degrees of protection - The operational safety protected light ensures their protection , described by the IP code with two digits . The first digit ( 1 to 6) the degree of protection against ingress of foreign bodies , the second digit ( 1-8 ) provides information on the degree of moisture protection. The higher protection includes each one with the lower . IP stands for "Ingress Protection" . If one of the types of protection not reported , this is a big " X".
Protection classes - construction and mode of operation determine the protection class of the lamp. The level of protection against electric shock describe three protection classes. Class 1 : luminaires for connection to the mains supply protection . The symbol is attached to the port side . Class 2 : Luminaires with additional insulation . You have no protective conductor connection . Class 3: Luminaires for operation with safety extra-low voltage.
Visual task - is determined by Hell-/Dunkel- and color contrasts , by the size of the details and by the speed and length of time at which the contrasts are perceived. The more difficult the visual task , the higher the lighting level should be.
Visual comfort - provides a lighting system when all the lighting quality criteria to meet more than the minimum requirements and it has an additional space creatively . A higher quality of lighting , achieved for example through the use of electronic control gear , improves visual comfort .
Transformer - low voltage spotlights and other low-voltage lamps without integrated transformer must be operated with upstream individual or collective transformers. Electronic transformers win over the conventional transformer technology in importance. They are small, compact and light
